Get ready to transform your caravan into a tidy, space-efficient haven on wheels!

  1. The “open slowly, one hand in” technique

Sherron White shared this tip for anyone who is planning on driving on any dirt roads for when it comes to stocking your fridge.

“Put what you can in baskets and soft items like packet grated cheese etc help keep other things in place. Secure the little locking bars in front of the baskets otherwise it will end up everywhere and leap out at you when you open it,” she said.

“Alway deploy the ‘open slowly, one hand in’ technique. Especially with the freezer. Being hit in the head with a lump of frozen chicken is not fun…

“Don’t underestimate the power of corrugations to move everything, even when you think it’s all good.”

  1. Clothing storage

Answering a question regarding storing children’s clothing around their bunks, Alisha Crosby had this suggestion after trying it out in her van.

“I cut the front and back out of these (wide and high roller storage compartments from Kmart) and joined them together with tape and zip-ties. Thinking of adding more shelves and using the low roller containers on them as well.”

  1. Hanging small items

Jo Schutz was looking for something to hang up all the small items in her caravan but couldn’t justify the price of the All Smalls holder she saw many people use.

“Scott found this at Bunnings (the Hills Clothesline Accessory Sock Rail) and it is a perfect fit onto the awning arm. This cost under $6.”

  1. Packing tips

Debbie Fay Trenerry’s tip was simple but one that is sure to help.

“Spend the next week living in the van. You will work out quickly what you do and don’t need,” she said.

  1. Coffee maker

If you can’t live without your morning coffee, this one’s for you. Jess Pynappels shared a myriad of tips storage tips before she set off on her adventure, but we wouldn’t have thought of this.

“The coffee maker fits in the sink while travelling.”

No worries about having to stick it inside a cupboard and having it move around, just pop it in the sink and off you go!

  1. Straps over drawers and doors

If you’re storing foods in your kitchen drawers, Brearne Florisson’s got a tip for you. She spoke from experience on this one – no one wants food stuff floating around when you’re driving on unsealed roads like the Gibb River Road or the Tele Track

“I have one tip…. With the combination of weight and corrugations the latch may not hold and the draw may open on its own. We ended up having to place those baby straps over some draws and doors to keep them closed.”

  1. Plastic tubs win 100 percent of the time

Kmart has to be the caravan organiser’s dream. Nichole Errington found plastic tubs from the iconic Aussie department store making upper cupboard storage a cinch.

“I keep all our food in these and they fit perfectly,” she said.
